Prof. Aries A. Arugay is an Non-resident Senior Fellow of the Hong Kong Research Center for Asian Studies (RCAS), Hong Kong, as well as Professor of Political Science from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, the Philippines. He is currently a nonresident fellow at the Regional Strategic and Political Studies Programme of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore and Editor-in-Chief of Asian Politics & Policy, a Scopus-indexed journal published by Wiley-Blackwell.

His research interests are comparative democratization, civil-military relations, electoral politics, and foreign policy. He was a visiting scholar in the Carter Center, Universidad Mayor de San Simón (Bolivia), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), the University of Sydney (Australia), Jeju Peace Institute (South Korea), the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and the National Institute of Defense Studies (Japan). He has been elected as a member or fellow of professional associations or institutions such as the National Research Council of the Philippines, the Southeast Asia Research Group, Social Weather Stations, the Philippine Public Safety College, and the Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering.

He obtained his PhD in Political Science from Georgia State University (United States) in 2014 as a Fulbright Fellow. He obtained his MA and BA (cum laude) in Political Science from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. In 2019, his alma mater Georgia State University awarded him the Sheth International Alumni Award for Exceptional Achievement. In 2020, the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Philippines awarded him as an Outstanding Young Scientist (Political Science) for his “contributions to research in political science and in particular for the study of democratization processes, security sector reform, and strategic studies in the Philippines and Asia.”.
