Prof. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal is an Non-resident Senior Fellow of the Hong Kong Research Center for Asian Studies (RCAS), Hong Kong. He is also Professor and Dean Faculty of the Social Science, Quaid-I-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan, where he teaches various aspects of Global Politics, Nuclear Studies, Conventional/Nuclear arms control, Demining, Pakistan's National Security, Hybrid warfare, etc. Prof. Jaspal also served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2021 and a Course Coordinator at the Foreign Services Academy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad.
Before joining the University (in August 2002), Dr. Jaspal had been a Research Fellow at the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad, and Islamabad Policy Research Institute, Islamabad, Pakistan. Prof. Jaspal, as a Guest Speaker/Visiting Lecturer, has delivered and continues to deliver lectures at many professional and training institutions, including distinguished NATO School, Oberammergau, Germany; NATO Defense College Rome, Italy, Center of Excellence: Defence against Terrorism, Ankara, Turkey; National Security & War Courses of Pakistan's National Defence University; Intelligence Bureau Academy, Command and Staff College Quetta; Air War College, Karachi, Pakistan Navy War College, Lahore and Foreign Service Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan.
Prof. Jaspal holds Ph.D. and M.Phil. in International Relations and M.A. in Political Science. He is an alumnus of the Sadiq Public School, Bahawalpur, Forman Christian College & Punjab University Lahore, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad European Peace University Stadtschlaining, Austria; Oslo University, Norway and Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States.
Prof. Jaspal's research interests include Pakistan's National Security, the Proliferation of nuclear weapons and missiles systems, particularly in South Asia and the Middle East, Arms Control/Disarmament, Nuclear Nonproliferation regime and Demining (1997 Ottawa Treaty), Trends in the global and domestic politics of Pakistan; Terrorism, particularly CBRN Terrorism; Cyber Terrorism; Landmines’ Challenges in post-war regions, and Bio-security.
Prof. Jaspal is a widely published scholar with more than 125 academic research papers, monographs, and chapters in edited volumes published in Pakistan and overseas. He authored three books Arms Control in South Asia: Politics, Postures, Practices (forthcoming 2023), India's Surgical Strike Stratagem: Brinksmanship and Responses (Islamabad, April 2019), and Nuclear Risk Reduction Measures and Restraint Regime in South Asia (New Delhi: Manohar, 2004).
Prof. Jaspal successfully supervised 17 Ph.D. and 60 M.Phil. theses. He contributed a weekly column for Weekly Pulse (Oct 2005-Sept, 2013) and Pakistan Observer (June 2016 to August 2019). Since February 2018, he has been regularly contributing columns to Arab News. Prof. Jaspal participated as a speaker in more than 300 National and International Seminars/ Conferences/Workshops/Group meetings etc. He also provides frequent expert commentary to international and local electronic media, i.e., BBC, Voice of America, and Russian TV. PTV World & News, Pakistan Radio, Al. Jazeera, Al Arabia, Press TV, local TV channels, etc.
